In this article, we spotlight two exciting projects in which Sustainable Finance Observatory (formerly 2DII) is involved: GoNaturePositive! and BioNext.

GoNaturePositive! Building a Nature Positive Economy

GoNaturePositive! is an initiative aiming to transform today’s world into a nature-positive economy through 4 key steps:

  • Delivering a clear definition and conceptual framework for the nature-positive economy;
  • Creating a roadmap that identifies policy and governance pathways towards a nature-positive economy;
  • Demonstrating how nature-positive practices can generate multiple benefits for people and the planet; and finally,
  • Harnessing the commitment of an Impact Board of multiplier networks towards achieving a long-term shared vision of the nature-positive economy.

This initiative led by Trinity Business School involves 20 partners across 14 countries and a network of global collaborators to accelerate awareness and transformative action among policymakers, investors, businesses and wider society. Research will result in more clarity on the concept of a nature-positive economy and provide guidance for businesses and policy makers on the priorities for transformation.

Businesses are at the heart of this Horizon Europe-funded initiative. GoNaturePositive! collaborates with existing initiatives to provide clarity on the concept of a nature-positive economy, guidance and support for business transition and very importantly how to measure progress towards achieving it.

GoNaturePositive! also works with nature-based enterprises who are nature-positive from creation. These include regenerative ocean farming and marine businesses in Ireland; bee-farming in Colombia; agro-ecological farming in Belgium; carbon-neutral forestry and nature-positive tourism in Italy and green building enterprises throughout Europe.

BIONEXT, Biodiversity at the heart of sustainable societies

BIONEXT is a research and innovation project that joins the fight for nature and biodiversity. The project produces new evidence to better understand biodiversity loss and demonstrates how biodiversity underpins every aspect of life; the water we drink, the food we eat, and our health. To secure and protect these values, the project demands transformative change: BIONEXT’s goal is a sustainable society, where links between biodiversity, water, food, energy, transport, climate, and health are acknowledged and nature and biodiversity are a part of everyday choices and policymaking.

BIONEXT creates and offers science-based solutions and tools for reversing biodiversity loss and achieving regenerative, nature-centered futures and societies. The project creates new knowledge and science-based solutions for sustainable futures, for example, for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), EU policymakers, and civil society.

BIONEXT is coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) and involves 10 partners from 8 countries.

Sustainable Finance Observatory (formerly 2DII) has been involved in brainstorming workshops held from May 13th to May 15th in the Netherlands to co-create transition pathways to realize BIONEXT nature positive visions for Europe in 2050.

A Future Where Finance Supports Nature

GoNaturePositive! and BioNext represent a paradigm shift. They move beyond mere mitigation of environmental damage, aiming for a deep transformation of our society and economy. The financial sector has a key role to play in this transformation and Sustainable Finance Observatory (formerly 2DII) is involved to encourage the mobilization of main stakeholders. By unlocking new investment opportunities and fostering responsible business practices, these projects pave the way for a future where finance, economy and nature work in harmony.

Stay tuned for further insights from Sustainable Finance Observatory (formerly 2DII) as we explore the evolving landscape of nature-positive finance.
